Monthly Forecast
May 2009
May offers material activity, energy, and a lively
mentality (despite the Mercury retrograde), but is short on linking
these to the emotions and emotional needs, and that says we might
move on choices that could be very dissatisfying in the end. Unless you
are undergoing significant contact to your natal Moon, the disconnect
between feelings and actions could be immense, and it doesn’t help that
the intuitive and feeling nature is precisely what we must connect with
to ride out the Mercury retrograde most successfully. So what do we do?
We can look to two other changes in direction, with
Saturn and Neptune, to give us the shifts in perspective that will help
us get a handle on things. A retrograde or direction can pop the
involved energy forward from the energy background we’ve grown
accustomed to and give us a new take on our daily life’s landscape. It’s
as if we’ve been riding an ocean liner, and the change of direction for
a planet suddenly places us on the shore. The scene is essentially the
same–ship, breeze, sky, ocean, sun, the other passengers, the activity
on shore–and yet suddenly we’re on a windswept beach, and our view of
the ship, and ocean, and the others we’d been riding along with just a
moment before, has changed–not all that much, the elements to the
picture are the same, it’s just that we’ve gotten a fresh perspective, a
new, and perhaps revealing, vantage point.
Saturn goes direct on the 16th at 6:17 PM PDT at 14
Virgo 54, and offers us a loosening up (or for some, a dam breaking!)
in matters of the natal House where this occurs; we should also see
some barriers fall in the area Saturn rules natally, and possibly in
subjects related to Saturn’s position in the natal chart. Saturn is one
of the more easily felt energies when it changes direction; we know it’s
happening because we seem to have been relieved of some kind of
restrictive, binding energy. The turnaround in Virgo suggests we may
find the atmosphere (and those in it) far less critical than we have of
late, and we ourselves may turn our attention to other than examining
details. We become interested in results, in ‘the harvest,’ and how we
can build toward it. This generally encourages a serious and
constructive attitude, but when Saturn goes direct we’ll be in the midst
of the Mercury retrograde in Taurus, and it’s a short hop to
misinterpreting the change in restrictions as a full speed ahead with
ideas concerning the material world, assets, earning, and the artisanal (Taurus).
So, forewarned is forearmed; it will feel so good to
be out from under that invisible thumb we’ll be tempted to run (ha! I
first wrote ‘fun’ but I don’t think it will be–I think it will have a
compulsive quality) in whatever direction beckons–and the Trickster of
Merc retro is known for beckoning us right over the cliff. We’re not
helped by a couple of aspects that occur, either: Mars quincunx Saturn,
pre-retro on the 10th, which will fire us up to do do do, and Venus
quincunx Saturn after direction, on the 20th, which may be the wake-up
call as to how successfully (or not) we’ve leapt forward, as we’ll be
required to measure the suitability of what we’re enthusing about
building against values, and we’ll need to see, without a doubt, how
this may affect relationships, earnings, and could reveal desires we
didn’t know we had.
Neptune retrogrades on the 28th at 3:07 PM PDT at 26
Aquarius 28, and does so with Jupiter exactly conjunct, and Uranus
precisely semi-sextile. This may bring expression highly
uncharacteristic of Neptune’s usual retrograde point, manifestation more
akin to a bomb going off than the typical fog rolling in. This can be
symbolic, of course, with the bomb most likely a psychological one that
deceives, obscures, exaggerates, and uses the intellect and
rationalization to create havoc. For a few this will be a ‘breaking
open’ spiritual moment, and for a few others it will be the sudden
public acclaim of the individual’s Art or efforts. Mars at this time
will also be very close to exact, in sextile, and brings in the possible
elements of all things Martian, to include egos, actual fire, and
firearms, with most likely the appearance of many headstrong, ‘me
first’ behaviors. We’ll see some situations as unexpectedly volatile,
certainly allowing that shift in viewpoint we were talking about.
Much excellent material has already been written by
others about the upcoming retrograde of Mercury on the 6th at 9:56 PM
PDT at 1 Gemini 44; I’ll just add a few things. The turnaround starts in
Air and moves quickly back into Earth, and this may be key to dealing
with it. We’ll start out wondering if our ideas and thinking are
correct, but we’ll soon move on to examining how well we’re doing with
material needs, with groundedness, with the beauty and aesthetic state
we want in our lives. We’ll be asking ourselves how well we’ve served
our environmental requirements, the things we need to live in a way that
allows the Soul to create, grow, and express. For ideas as to what our
Soul had in mind in the first place, look to the placement of Earth
(directly opposed the Sun in any chart) for clues via sign, element, and
aspects.
The Sun moving into Gemini won’t help our Merc retro
quandary, either, as it brings our attention to the matters of the
portion of the natal chart through which it transits, and these we
likely have a natural tendency to approach through the mind, anyway.
When we look at the element distribution of the major bodies for the
month, we find the spread fairly even except for Water, which gets only
unco-operative, independent, intellectual Uranus–no wonder we’ll be
suffering an emotional disconnect.
Full Moon comes right after Merc retrogrades, on the
8th at 9:03 PM PDT at 18 Scorpio 41. The joined Earth/ Moon opposed the
Sun makes no exact aspects; to my way of thinking this puts all the
effect into culmination of the matters of the natal House where this
occurs–a Moon of personal endings, and this is also true for any exact
aspects it forms in the natal chart–the energies will come to some sort
of rounding out, hitting their ripest and probably most overt point.

New Moon occurs the 24th at 5:12 AM at 3 Gemini 28;
again, nothing exact, though the quincunx to Pluto is close and speaks
to me, saying, ‘Pay attention.” Okay, what do I see? That the New Moon
may tear new starts asunder, may pluck tender seedlings from the ground,
may change the course of those things we initiate at this time in a way
that transforms their meaning, intent, and outcome completely. Also note
in this chart the triumvirates of Jupiter, Chiron, and Uranus, and of
Mercury, Pallas, and Mars, and the duo of Venus and Vesta, each grouping
united by degree. This suggests the possibility of a sudden wound to
society, the courage to act on wise communications, and the ability to
hold love, relationships, and assets sacred–in more personal terms we
may see this as ‘lucky’ episodes of healing or lashing out, a
willingness to act on what we know to be smart, and sex and love for a
few days, at least, getting the respect and good press they deserve.
